TSHP Submits Comment on USP 800
In early July the TSHP Public Affairs and Advocacy Council met to discuss the issues associated with the proposed USP 800 Chapter. Through their efforts and those of the TSHP Executive Committee a response was drafted and sent on behalf of TSHP to USP.
The Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists (TSHP) represents the Health-System pharmacy professionals of Texas. The philosophy of TSHP is that pharmacists have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to be leaders and practitioners in all areas of the health care industry and to improve the health of the public. The practice of pharmacy is based on evidenced based, clinically significant research that improves the care of patients. Because the pharmacy profession is based on sound, professionally accepted practice, we ask that those rules and regulations which govern the practice also be based on sound clinical data. TSHP supports taking all possible measures to protect patients and employees from Hazardous exposure provided a clinically significant danger exists from exposure. Many recommendations in USP 800 call for significant structural and practice changes for Health-Systems. These changes will increase costs and potentially prevent some institutions from providing care to patients. The end result will be decreased level of care available to the public in some areas of Texas. TSHP asks that clinically significant danger be detailed and documented in the areas of USP 800 detailed below. If evidence based, clinically significant data that is accepted by the medical community is not available, we ask that those recommendations be removed from USP 800. We support a USP 800 that provides for the safe use of Hazardous Drugs but does not place unfounded rules and regulations on Health-Systems that would reduce the care of our patients.
