340B PRIME VENDOR PROGRAM BACKGROUND

Section 340B of the Veterans Health Care Act of 1992 requires drug companies whose drugs are covered by the Medicaid program to provide discounts on covered drugs purchased by certain government-supported covered entities, such as disproportionate share hospitals (DSHs), federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) and state-operated AIDS drug assistance programs.

The 340B statute also provides for the development of a “prime vendor program.”  The purpose of the program is to enhance distribution of covered outpatient drugs to covered entities and to secure sub-340B pricing discounts for participants.

In September 2004, Apexus was awarded Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) 340B prime vendor contract.  The contact is for a five year term.

After a facility has met HRSA’s requirements and becomes 340B eligible, the facility is automatically eligible to participate in the 340B Prime Vendor Program, which is free and voluntary.

The 340B Prime Vendor Program serves its participants in three primary ways.

·         negotiates sub-340B pricing on pharmaceuticals

·         establishes distribution solutions and networks that improve access to affordable medications

·         provides other value-added products and services, such as split-billing software

If you are interested in participating in a pharmacy internship with 340b PVP/Apexus, we would be happy to discuss the program with you.
